Sigiriya is a rock fortress that rises almost 200 metres out of the flat jungle of Sri Lanka's cultural triangle. It was built as a royal retreat by King Kashyapa in the 5th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The climb takes you through water gardens, past the ancient Sigiriya frescoes and the giant Lion's Paws gateway, and ends in the ruins of the palace on the summit with wide views over the forest.
Things to do in Sigiriya
- Climb Sigiriya Rock early in the morning, before the heat and the crowds
- Watch the sunrise from nearby Pidurangala Rock, which has the best view of Sigiriya itself
- Visit the Dambulla cave temples, about 20 minutes away
- Take a village tour with a bullock cart ride and a home-cooked lunch
- Go on a jeep safari to see wild elephants at Minneriya or Kaudulla
Travel tips
- Start by 7am. Midday on the rock is very hot and crowded.
- Wear comfortable shoes and bring water. There are many steps.
- Dress modestly at the Dambulla temples. Shoulders and knees covered.
- Elephant gatherings at Minneriya are usually best in the drier months, roughly July to October.

How long does it take to climb Sigiriya?
Most people take about 2 to 3 hours for the full climb and return, including time at the frescoes and the summit.
Is Sigiriya or Pidurangala better?
They are different. Sigiriya has the history and the frescoes. Pidurangala has the best view of Sigiriya itself and is a good sunrise climb. Many guests do both on different days.
